![]() If any other info is needed I'm happy to share. So here's my question: How do I move my Documents Folder? (Blindly messing with the registy has forsaken me on other matters before) I did some digging and I found the relevant registry keys to force windows to do as I say, but I'm afraid of unwanted consequences. Apparently it tried to download all my files on top of the local copies, telling me that there was not enough space on my disk. I told it to use the existing OneDrive folder. Obviously It wanted to download my files from the cloud, and asked me where to put the OneDrive folder. I then tried to log back in to OneDrive from fresh. This did not in fact move my documents folder out of this evil OneDrive folder, effectively leaving me right where I started. Then I unlinked my account following these instructions. Now, the next time you save an Office file, your computer will be the default save location. Under the 'Save Documents' section, check the box next to 'Save to Computer by Default.' Finally, click the 'Ok' button in the bottom-right corner of the window to apply the change. When trying to undo the OneDrive snchronization I signed back in to one drive, which still remembered my mail address etc. Click the 'Save' tab in the left-hand pane. The funny thing is, OneDrive was apparently inactive on my machine. When trying to move the directory in the way described above, I get an error message: (It's in german, but it says something like this:) "The Folder cannot be moved, because there is a non redirectible folder in the same location. ![]() I want to make sure that any software trying to find stuff that was put there can still find it after I move the directory. The affected folders are stored under "C:\users\ \OneDrive\Documents" and I would like them to go to "X:\Documents" or something like that. This worked fine for all folders that weren't affected by OneDrive. "My Videos") and changed the directory path under the "location" tab. To do this, I opened file explorer, right clicked the folder (e.g. I use 3 or 4 Windows PCs at any given time, and I frequently upgrade or replace my computers throughout the year, so this system has been a huge timesaver for me and has greatly simplified and streamlined my life.I'm running out of space on my C drive, so I started moving my data folders to my hdd. If you don’t have much data, or you only use one PC and you rarely switch or upgrade your computer, maybe none of this will mean much to you. This is very helpful if you are setting up a new Windows 10 PC with limited storage-like a 256GB SSD-and it’s nice to not have to eat up all of the bandwidth on your network downloading gigabytes of files. ![]() But, until you actually click on a file to access it, OneDrive just shows you a pointer to the file and keeps it stored in the cloud. The beauty of it is that you can still see all of the files listed-so it is like having them stored locally. If you check the box, it only downloads files as you use them. There is an option in OneDrive Settings for “Files On-Demand”. That means when I add, remove, or change files in a folder on one PC, those updates are automatically reflected on every other PC I use and I always have access to my current versions of everything because there is technically only one version that every PC is sharing.Īs a bonus-you don’t actually have to download all of the data. You can use its icon for the above script shortcut. The Windows Fax and Scan executable is located at C:WindowsSystem32WFS.exe. You may create a shortcut to the script and change the icon accordingly if desired. By setting all of the computers up the same way, they are all actually working off of the exact same data in OneDrive. Download the above script redirectscanneddocuments.vbs, and save it to a permanent location. I also find this invaluable because I use multiple computers at once depending on where I am and what I am doing. Once you point the location of the system folders to your OneDrive versions, all of your files will magically appear, and you are back in business. You won’t-or shouldn’t-need to transfer or copy data from the local drives because it is a new PC with no data on it yet. Just log in and you’re all set.īut, what about your data? Well, now that you have been using OneDrive by default, just go into the system folders on the new Windows 10 PC and follow the steps from before. Windows 10 allows you to sync a variety of settings, such as language preferences, passwords, color themes, and even File Explorer settings, and notification preferences, so you don’t have to start from scratch and configure everything again. Microsoft has already streamlined much of the process from the user profile and preferences side. ![]() The real magic happens when you set up a new Windows PC. When you transfer photos of your kid’s birthday party to Pictures on your Windows PC, you are actually storing them safely and securely in the cloud in the Pictures folder in OneDrive. Voila! Now, when you view the files on your Windows desktop, you are actually seeing the files from the Desktop folder in OneDrive.
